“The Bear”, Napkins, And The Nuanced Puerto Rican Representation Of Tina Marrero

The much anticipated third season of “The Bear” hit streaming this week, and the people have many thoughts. The season as a whole continues to receive mixed reviews, largely due to a tonal shift that dodged the dramatic kitchen fights and shocking family dinners and instead invited viewers into the inner workings of its central character Carmy Berzatto’s (Jeremy Allen White) mind in a fugue-like state as he recognizes that he does not know how to proceed after coming to terms with his trauma.
In between artful montages and flashbacks, “The Bear” offered a slice of what it does best–character portrait episodes that explain more of the back story of individual members of the ensemble cast. This season, at last, line cook turned sous chef Tina Marrero (Liza Colon-Zayas) got her moment to shine.
