As May slips into June and summer shimmers on the edge of the peoples’ minds, the competition for the song of the summer begins. This May brought in several strong pop contenders, and a number of underrated indie rock songs. Without further ado, here’s May’s installation of Sounds From My Wits End.
“Psycho Killer” by Miley Cyrus (tribute cover of Talking Heads)
Miley Cyrus is back with another killer rock cover. A number of her covers pioneered her pivot into retro style pop-rock that audiences have come to love, from Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” to the Cranberries’ “Zombie” and more. Now, Cyrus joins a growing list of acclaimed artists covering new wave icons Talking Heads for a tribute album for their critically acclaimed concert film “Stop Making Sense.”
The original live album was accompanied by a concert film and extensive exclusive footage of the band. Each contemporary artist invited to take part in the project (thus far, Lorde, Paramore, and girl in red) have made the new wave songs their own. Cyrus’ cover of the eerie “Pyscho Killer” gives listeners the experimental funk the Disney star turned Grammy winner gave listeners a taste of on “Flowers.”
